Volkswagen Canada to Build Ultra-Fast Charging Network

Volkswagen Group Canada has formed a company called Electrify Canada to build a charging network for electric vehicles.

The company will build ultra-fast, direct current charging stations across Canada. Volkswagen expects the network to be ready for use by the second quarter of 2019.

Electrify Canada is similar to Volkswagen’s previous project called Electrify America.

The automaker started the Electrify America project as part of the settlement for the diesel emissions cheating scandal. Volkswagen will invest $2 billion in zero emission vehicle infrastructure and education programs in the United States.

Electrify Canada is a new limited partnership company based in Ajax, Ontario. It will manage the rollout and ongoing operation of the network. The company will work with local vendors to locate, build and operate the network.

Initially, Electrify Canada will install 32 electric vehicle charging stations around busy highways and in major metro areas in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. Each charging site will have four chargers on average.

The chargers will use the non-proprietary DC fast charging technologies. Charging power will range from 150kW to 350kW to support the new vehicles with bigger batteries and longer range.

The stations will also provide 50kW to power the current electric vehicles in the market that have smaller batteries and lower range.

Electrify Canada will cover the planning, procurement, and implementation of the entire project. The goal is to ensure that the charging stations support all automotive brands.

“The Canadian electric vehicle market is growing, creating a great need for charging that is fast, convenient and available in key locations. We are thrilled to be able to offer this service and to take a leadership position in providing this key EV adoption enabler to the Canadian market,” said Daniel Weissland, president and CEO, Volkswagen Group Canada, Inc.
